Our First Dinner At Sea

We have select dining on this cruise which means that we can eat dinner at any time between 5:30pm and 9:30pm, but we do not have a consistent wait staff or table. It is more like a regular landslide restaurant. Our waiter tonight was I Gede (pronounced G'day) and he was fantastic.

This was The dinner menu in the Opus Dining room on Day 1.

I ordered Cream of Wild Forrest Mushroom Soup. It was good, but a bit too salty.

Sweet Pea had Chilled Thai Coconut Soup. It was very tasty, but it was surprisingly spicy. Only order this is you like spicy food! She said to me, "I bet the waiters were surprised I could eat this!"

Ross started with the escargot. It had a nice garlicky flavor, but was just okay.

Grandma Trudy had the roasted beets which were excellent.  I don't think we ever saw another dish in the MDR that matched the level of precision and presentation of this one.  The bright red cubes of beets contrasting with the white feta cheese was lovely.  The other dishes looked sloppy by comparison.

For her entrée, Sweet Pea had the Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli, which she loved.

I had the home style pork chops served with mashed sweet potatoes topped with marshmallow fluff and green beans. My meal was delicious. I did not realize that the pork chop was going to be breaded and fried, but it was cooked well. The breading was crispy and the pork chop itself was very tender. Highly recommended.

Ross and Grandma Trudy ordered the Aged Prime Rib of Beef, which they loved. It arrived medium-rare as requested. This was far better than any beef we had on our Disney cruises.

For dessert we ordered several desserts and split them. The chocolate mousse was very smooth with an excellent chocolate flavor. It was topped with some bland marinated cherries which detracted from the dish.

Grandma Trudy had creme brûlée which she loved, but I thought was not as good as The Beach Club's on Key Largo. It was thinner and not as creamy.

There was also a creme caramel which was not very good. It was almost identical to the creme brûlée but had a bit of an off flavor.

One of the main reasons we sailed on Celebrity was because of its reputation for good food and we were not disappointed. So far, the quality of the food had been much better than on our two Disney cruises, although not as good as our Crystal cruise.
