On Brian's recommendation, we headed to the No Name Pub on Big Pine Key for lunch. We took a wrong turn and ended up on some dirt roads for a while. There were a lot of big puddles in the road, too. It was an adventure!
We finally found it!
Inside, the walls are covered with $1 bills. And I do mean covered. The waitress told us the they estimated there is almost a quarter of a million dollars in money stapled to the walls. The tradition started when a guy wrote his name and phone number on a dollar bill and stapled it to the wall to give to a girl he had met that night.
Supposedly the building is insured, but the money is not because then the owner would have to claim it as income and pay tax on it. (All I could think about was "No, there is literally money _in_ the banana stand.")
We ate outside and while we waited for our food, Sweet Pea was able to wander around and examine the palm trees and watch little chameleons.
We started with some coconut shrimp, which were okay, but not as good as the ones we had yesterday in Key West. These were clearly previously breaded and frozen shrimp.
We also ordered the Spicy Caribbean style chicken wings, which were a little too hot for me, but Ross liked them. I had expected them to be sweeter, but found them a little bland other than the heat. I prefer regular Buffalo wings to these.
The smoked fish dip was okay. I thought it tasted a lot like tuna salad.
The Key shrimp pizza was very, very good. The plump shrimp were amazingly flavorful and the pizza was loaded with cheese. The scallions added a nice pungency. My only complaint is that the crust was doughy. I had to use a fork and knife because it was so limp.
The food was a little uneven but overall, I would recommend the place for atmosphere and the Key Shrimp Pizza.
On our way out, Sweet Pea insisted that she did _not_ want to staple a dollar to the wall. Grandma Trudy posed against one of the walls for us though.
